What separates a good mobile strategy game from a time sink
Strategy games and phones should be a perfect match. You think, you plan, you make decisions — none of it needs twitch reflexes. And yet so many mobile strategy titles are built around timers designed to pull you back every twenty minutes.
The ones I keep coming back to, like Tidewatch Empire, throw that model out. You can plan several moves deep in one long sitting, or dip in briefly, and the game doesn't punish either approach. That respect for your time is the single biggest thing that separates a keeper from a chore.
Readability is the other half of it. On a small screen you need clean icons, clear numbers, and a map you can parse at a glance. The moment I have to squint or pinch-zoom to understand what's happening, I'm out.
My tip for newcomers: don't expand too fast. Most of these games quietly punish overreach, and learning to consolidate before you grow is usually the real lesson they're teaching.
