How arcade racers nail speed on a touchscreen

There's something slightly magical about a racing game that makes you feel speed without any physical controls. No wheel, no pedals, just a slab of glass — and yet the best arcade racers get your heart rate up anyway.

Neon Drift Rally is a great example of how it's done. It leans into drifting and boost chains instead of trying to simulate real driving. That's the smart move on mobile: exaggerate the fun bits and ditch the fiddly realism nobody wants to steer with their thumbs.

Camera work and sound do most of the heavy lifting. Pull the camera in close, add some motion blur at high speed, layer on a thumping soundtrack, and suddenly a gentle tilt feels like white-knuckle driving. It's a bit of a trick, but it's a trick that works.

If you're new to the genre, start with tilt controls off and tap steering on — it's more forgiving while you learn the tracks. Once the layouts are in your muscle memory, that's when these games really sing.
